Blowoff
Blowoff is a CD single released by The Residents in June of 1992.[1] It was later included with the hardcover edition of the "Freak Show" graphic novel in December of that same year.[2]
History
Part four of the Freak Show mulit-media project, Blowoff is a 13 Minute single released by The Residents in the Summer of 1992. It collects several outtakes from the Freak Show album and combines them into one long suite of tracks, however it is unknown whether or not any overdubs were added prior to the single's release. The CD also included an advertisement and membership information for the UWEB fan club, which would become defunct in January of 1993.
Following the single's June release, it would be included in the Freak Show comic book special edition, released in December, and is generally considered to be the 'soundtrack' to the comic book. Following this inclusion, the single fell out of print, and was only re-released fully as part of the 2021 Freak Show pREServed edition, along with demo versions of the tracks featured. These tracks of which this suite is based upon were re-instated into the original album's running order in 2003 with the release of the 13th Anniversary edition of Freak Show. These versions featured previously unheard vocals from Tex The Barker introducing the songs, and use roughly 8 minutes worth of audio found in this single.
'Blowoff' is derived from circus slang for a back stage part of the freak show where customers interested in seeing more freaks too weird for the general audience would pay to visit.
