Steal This Disc is a sampler album released by Rykodisc in early 1987 to promote their new CD releases.
Background
By 1986, the compact disc was on the verge of outselling vinyl for the first time—the new format allowed for more music in a less delicate and more portable form.
The Residents had noted this and teamed up with Rykodisc, a CD exclusive label who had achieved notoriety through their Frank Zappa re-issues, to produce a set of 2 'Best Of The Residents' compilations, Heaven? & Hell!
The following year, Rykodisc released Steal This Disc, a sampler album designed to promote their then-current catalog of CD releases, including Heaven? and Hell!.
In 1988, Rykodisc released a follow-up, Steal This Disc 2, which featured an excerpt from God In Three Persons.
