"The Gift Keeps Giving" (or alternatively "The Gift That Keeps Giving") is the fifth track from Act 3 of The Residents' 2025 "modern opera" Doctor Dark. In this track, the disfigured teenager Mark is greeted by Dr. Anastasia Dark who visits him with a proposal to free him from his suffering.
A demo of this track, recorded in 2023, was previewed on an issue of the Cherry Red Residents newsletter, and later released on the Doctor Dark's Demos album, exclusively to streaming services.
Libretto
As silence fills the small house, a despondent Mark retreats to the sofa until a knock interrupts the youth's unending agony. Initially reluctant, he timidly responds, permitting the entrance of Doctor Dark, a striking figure with white hair, a long white coat and a bluebird on his shoulder. As the bird chirps incessantly, the doctor carefully positions a strange piece of apparatus.
I can help you if you need to leave your loathsome land behind you; My machine can open and end emptiness, just like an old friend, but you must accept the fact that your acceptance IS YOUR LAST ACT!
