The Lonely Wound

The Lonely Wound is an upcoming studio album by The Residents,[1][2] currently expected for release "around February 2027" through Cherry Red Records, MVD Audio and New Ralph Too.[3]

First announced in the February 2025 issue of the Cherry Red Residents newsletter, the album was originally described as "X-rated" and "far too sexually explicit for us to discuss online without Zucky and Musky's interference".[4][5] This initial concept was ultimately abandoned,[6] with the album instead becoming "a collection of songs" with "no concept", except that "each song depicts a protagonist with a 'lonely wound'".[1]

The Residents had completed recording demos for the album by April 2025;[7] tracks demoed for the album include "Almost Alien" and "Strange Insect".[3] By January 2026, the group had begun recording instrumental backing tracks for the album,[1][8] however, the sessions were delayed for several months following "an unexpected and serious health-related matter" involving a member of the group.[1][2]

The album's recording sessions had concluded by August 2026,[3] with The Residents working on the album's final mixes with their producer Eric Drew Feldman.[2]

History

Initial development and delay

On February 1st 2025, weeks before the release of The Residents' album Doctor Dark, it was announced in the Cherry Red Records Residents newsletter that the group had already begun working on their next album, which was described as "far too sexually explicit for us to discuss online without Zucky and Musky's interference."[5] In the March 29th issue of the newsletter, the new project was described as "X-rated".[4]

In the May issue of the newsletter, it was noted that The Residents were spending "a lot of time and energy" working on the new album, alongside the development of Eskimo Live!, a planned live tour based on their 1979 album Eskimo.[9] In the following month's newsletter, it was noted that the new album had been "a while in the making", overlapping with the end of production of Doctor Dark, and described the recordings in progress as "remarkable".[10]

Work on the new album continued from August through December 2025; in October it was said that "people around them" were referring to the album as The Residents' "dirty-naughty album".[11][12][13][14] Around the festive season, one member of the group (later said to be the project's lyricist) suffered "an unexpected and serious health-related matter", which forced the postponement of the Eskimo Live! tour, and apparently delayed the completion of the new album.[2]

As of the end of January 2026, it was said that The Residents were continuing work on the new album, which at that time had "a working title so rude we daren't feed it into the algorithm here".[15] Just over a month later, the "recently stricken Resident" was said to be "recuperating well and eager to return to active service on the front line of all things Residential as soon as possible", with the "much discussed 'naughty album'" still "taking shape" in the meantime.[16] In May 2026, a representative of Cherry Red Records stated that the new album's title "keeps changing", but that "THEY are working hard on bringing it home as we speak".[17]

Resumption and completion

By June 2026, The Residents' lyricist had recovered enough for the group to fully resume work on the album;[18] a spokesperson for the group's management company The Cryptic Corporation later stated that the project's lyrics had been "written/reworked after the 'health issue'".[2] By this time, the original "X-rated" concept had been quietly abandoned, with The Residents finding the idea "difficult to do", and ultimately deciding that they would be repeating themselves, given that they had previously produced a similar concept with the 2006 album Tweedles!.[6]

Rescheduled Eskimo Live! tour dates were announced in July, and an interview with Homer Flynn of The Cryptic Corporation was published by Rolling Stone Japan, in which he announced that the new album was titled The Lonely Wound, and would now be "a collection of songs" which "doesn't have a concept", and explained that "you could say that each song depicts a protagonist who has suffered a 'lonely wound,' but The Residents don't really make the meaning of the lyrics that clear".[1]

In August 2026 it was announced that The Residents had completed recording The Lonely Wound, with the group working on the album's final mixes with their producer Eric Drew Feldman.[3][2] The album's release is currently expected "around February 2027" through Cherry Red Records, MVD Audio and New Ralph Too.[3]

Track listing

The album's final track listing is yet to be announced, however the titles of two songs demoed for the album have been revealed as of August 2026: "Almost Alien" and "Strange Insect".[3]
