The Sandman Waits
The Sandman Waits is an EP by The Residents. It is a short-form adaption of their 2007 album, The Voice of Midnight.
Background
The EP was a companion to The Voice Of Midnight, incorporating many of the same musical and lyrical themes from the album. Tracks originate from the Voice Of Midnight Sessions. The EP also features three cover songs, two versions of 'Mr. Sandman', written by Pat Ballard, and 'Fly Me To The Moon' by Bart Howard.
The Sandman Waits continues The Residents' longstanding tradition of releasing shorter form, more accessible versions of seemingly unforgiving source material, taking themes from the hour-long musical drama The Voice of Midnight, and adapting them into a 22 minute long 1950s cover EP.
The title is taken from the opening line of Residents Uninc's song 'Sandman', 'The Sandman Waits (For no-one's sake).'
Release
The EP was sold exclusively to those who pre-ordered The Voice Of Midnight from Ralph America in a limited edition of 300 copies. However, when pre-orders exceeded expectations, the number of copies manufactured increased to 500. This disc was issued in a plastic envelope with a single card inlay. In 2014 A Bandcamp digital single edition was released with altered cover art.
An edited version of the title track from the EP was later included on the compilation album Ten Two Times, retitled 'Midnight.'
