Tuxedomoon are an experimental music group, formed in 1977 in San Francisco, California, United States. The group, originally consisting of electronic music students Steven Brown and Blaine L. Reininger, used electronic violins, guitars, saxophones and synthesizers to develop a unique sound. Bassist Peter Principle, vocalist Winston Tong and filmmaker Bruce Geduldig joined the band for live performances.
In 1978 they independently released their first single, "No Tears". In 1979, they signed to Ralph Records, contributing three songs to the label's compilation album Subterranean Modern in the same year. Ralph released the band's first album, Half-Mute, in 1980, followed by a second album, Desire, in 1981. In 1982 the band moved to British label Operation Twilight for the release of their third album, Divine.
Reininger left Tuxedomoon in 1983, and the group relocated to Europe, signing to Crammed Discs and releasing their fourth album, Holy Wars, in 1985, which became the band's biggest commercial success. They followed Holy Wars with their fifth album, Ship of Fools, the following year. In 1987, the band performed on the soundtrack for Wim Wenders' film Wings of Desire.
Tuxedomoon split in 1990, reuniting in 1997 for the Next Festival in Tel Aviv, Israel, and releasing a new album, Joeboy in Mexico. They conducted a reunion tour in 2000 and released another studio album, Cabin in the Sky, in 2004. In 2015 they collaborated with Cult With No Name to produce the soundtrack for the documentary Blue Velvet Revisited, featuring footage of the making of David Lynch's film Blue Velvet.
Bruce Geduldig died on March 7th 2016 in Sacramento, California, and Peter Principle died on July 17th 2017 in Brussels, Belgium. Tuxedomoon has been largely inactive following Principle's death; Reininger and Brown continue to work together and separately as musical artists.
