Dookietown is an EP by The Residents, released November 1st 2024 on streaming platforms and 10" vinyl through Cherry Red Records, MVD Audio and New Ralph Too. Presented in acknowledgment of the 2024 United States presidential election, the six song "election day souvenir" EP is a concept piece which poses the "increasingly pressing" question: "Where do clowns go when the show is over?"
The EP's concept originated in the 1990s as part of "the whole Freak Show, Bad Day arc", but "never quite reached fruition", until it was "re-remembered, re-animated and re-worked" in the spring of 2024,[1] when The Residents recorded Dookietown "pleasingly quickly" and in secret, during a "brief break" in the sessions for their (otherwise unrelated) studio album Doctor Dark.[2]
The group, apparently hoping to "act on impulse (like we did back in the day) and get the music out there ASAP",[2] requested that the EP be "rush released for November 1st", four days before the election. In advance of the release of the EP, on September 27th 2024, the opening track "Duck Sauce" was released to streaming services as a digital single.
On October 1st 2024, Psychofon Records released "Duck Sauce Refried", a limited edition "Record Object d'Art" of only twenty-five copies, featuring an exclusive remix of the opening track from Dookietown by composer Ego Plum.[3] The remix was released for free on YouTube by Psychofon shortly thereafter.
The EP's cover art was created by Homer Flynn of Porno Graphics using generative artificial intelligence; Flynn had previously used AI to create the cover art for the limited edition compilation Leftovers Again?! AGAIN?!, and later used AI in the creation of the artwork for Doctor Dark.
