Duck Sauce Refried

"Duck Sauce Refried" is a limited edition 10" vinyl "Record Object d'Art" and remix single by The Residents, which was released October 1st 2024 by Psychofon Records in an edition of only twenty-five numbered copies.

The "object d'art" is a 10" dubplate permanently fixed to a mini-USB record player, featuring an exclusive remix by composer Ego Plum of the song "Duck Sauce" from The Residents' EP, Dookietown,[1] which was released the following month.

Several days after the release of the "object d'art", "Duck Sauce Refried" was posted to YouTube by Psychofon.

History

While preparing their mini-album Dookietown for release, The Residents approached composer Ego Plum to create a remix of one of the mini-album's tracks, "Duck Sauce". According to Plum: "The audio stems for the song [...] were hand-delivered to my studio on a USB drive shaped like a human thumb. A man I had never seen before waited for me to transfer the files and left without any instructions besides a shrug when I asked for some guidance on the remix. He handed me a note that said he would return in 48 hours to pick up the finished track."[2]

The remix was announced for release in September 2024 by Psychofon Records, as part of an extremely limited edition "object d'art" consisting of a dubplate permanently affixed to a USB record player. The record player and attached dubplate are housed within a specially made "black magnet box", 36 x 36 x 15cm in size, with Dookietown artwork adorning the sides and bottom. A Dookietown logo is printed onto a viewing window on the top of the box, through which the contents can be seen.

The mini-USB record player features an RCA output, allowing the object's owners to listen to the dubplate by means of connecting the player to external speakers or to a personal computer.[1] A USB connection cable is also included in the package.

Release

Within seconds of becoming available on October 1st, Psychofon announced that the item had sold out.[3] Psychofon has encouraged the item's twenty-five owners to distribute digital copies of the track freely on the Internet "so that all interested fans, collectors and lovers of The Residents can enjoy" the otherwise unavailable remix.[1] The track was posted to YouTube by Psychofon on October 7th.
