"Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" is a song written and recorded by James Brown. Released as a two-part single in 1965, it was Brown's first song to reach the Billboard Hot 100 Top Ten, peaking at number eight, and was a number-one R&B hit, topping the charts for eight weeks. It was covered in The Residents 1976 album "The Third Reich 'N' Roll" on the suite "Swastikas on Parade".

History

This song compared to others on the suite has quite a history with the group. It has been known that The Residents are huge James Brown fans and have covered his work on multiple occasions. This cover version is arguable the farthest from the original on the entire album with the whole song being translated into German by the group. Pamela Zeibak or Peggy Honeydew are both credited on the album but it is unknown who performed the song.

Many fans know that this album was produced by playing over a track of the original song then removing the track. Homer Flynn has said that for this song specifically they decided to bring the song back in but only for the iconic horn hits giving a sense of "home" in such an avant-garde cover. This actually makes the album the first known commercially released record to samples Brown's work pre dating his common appearance in hip-hop by about 15 years.

While The Residents are big fans of this album this specific song was only performed live a total of three times at each of the "Dog Stab!" shows. This live version is featured in the middle of the Third Reich 'N' Roll portion of the show and features new parts from Nolan Cook given the song a modern feel. Around the same The Residents also released "Groovy Great RDX" which features a shortened edit of this song.

Lyrics

1974 Swastikas on Parade version

Nicht wohl Hufte
Was die neu Rasse denken
Nicht eine schlechtes
Papa hat eine nagelneue Beutel
Papa, Er macht die Ruck
Papa, Er macht die Ruck
Er macht die Krummung
Gerecht die wies
Er macht die Fliege
Alles Tag und alles Nacht
Das Ding, wie der Bummerang[1]
